His lust for an  early 60s Impala convertible has been an ongoing thing in that strip and provides most of his motivation. Just like a lot of us when we were teens. He even works at a parts store for his cash.

I’m sure   that the creator has that same lust . Otherwise they wouldn’t care enough to get the details like the windshield curve, steering wheel, etc right.
